Carpet Flooring

Carpet buying guide

Most often, carpet is the floor covering of choice for stairs since it provides traction and cushions falls. It's also a popular flooring option for family and living rooms as well as bedrooms. The area where the carpet will be installed, the function of the space, and the amount of foot traffic should be considered before making a final carpet choice. You can find a wide variety of styles at Carpet Den Interiors, a locally-owned carpet store in Franklin, Tennessee.

Fibers

Nylon, a time-honored fiber, and triexta, a newer fiber, are the most durable synthetic fibers. Both are appropriate for high traffic areas. A wool carpet has a longer lifespan, but it is best for low-traffic spaces. Polyester is known for its inherent stain resistance and vibrant colors. Olefin, or polypropylene, is water, mold, mildew resistant, and highly stain resistant.

Loop vs. cut pile

Carpeting is constructed of fiber loops that are sewn onto a backing. These loops can be cut at the top to create additional carpet styles. Cut pile styles are softer underfoot than loop pile styles. 'Pile' refers to the density of fibers along with the length of those fibers. In general, carpet with a dense, short pile is most durable. Cut and loop pile is used to create geometric designs.

Underlayment

Underlayment must be installed beneath carpeting, or it will quickly become worn. Underlayment also adds insulation and provides cushioning underfoot. The type of carpeting and the amount of foot traffic determine the density and thickness of the padding. Some carpet companies, such as Mohawk, manufacture underlayment, so the match between the two is always perfect.
